Prato Piazza in the Braies Dolomites

Prato Piazza, a plateau that is two thousand metres above sea level, is distinguished by broad meadows and fritillary butterflies. Here at the end of the Braies Valley there are still many types of flora that have died out elsewhere, which is why the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park has been established for the entire area around this little jewel in the Alta Pusteria Valley.

Prato Piazza, which is near Hotel Trenker, attracts not only amateur botanists but also keen mountaineers. Surrounded as it is by spectacular peaks like Monte Cristallo or Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo, the 2839 metre-high Picco di Vallandro or the Crepe di Val Chiara that is known as the "Grande Piramide", Prato Piazza is the starting point for unforgettable hikes and walks in the east of South Tyrol.

There's also plenty for people who prefer cold to warm weather. In winter “Plätz”, as the plateau in the Dolomites is known locally, is the top destination for lovers of snowshoeing and ski-touring. A hike up to the summit cross of Monte Specie should also be on your list of things to do before you die just because of the panoramic views it affords. On a sunny day you can even catch a glimpse of the three peaks of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. How worthwhile is that! People who are not interested in restorative winter hikes can get their skis on. Prato Piazza high-altitude cross-country route is one of South Tyrol's finest cross-country courses.  Even international professional skiers like the circular route and get ready for the season here in peaceful and secluded surroundings.

Prato Piazza is easy to get to - in the height of summer with public transport and for the rest of the year with your car - and really cannot be given a miss...
